MEDICAL EQUIPMENT SERVICING & TECHNICAL SUPPORT

The Institute is offering a Statement  of Attainment in Medical Equipment Servicing and Technical Support through its distance education unit.

1. This course is for people who require special skills training in current employment.  (Documentary evidence will be required)
2. Applicants must be employed in the relevant industry.
3. Applicants who have completed previous relevant education and training courses
4. Applicants who are seeking employment in an area where the skill is employed.

The core modules are as follows:

• Occupational Health and Safety
• Medical Equipment Principles
• Anatomy, Physiology and Infection Control

Part 1 of the course gives an overview of:

• Clinical terminology
• Electrical safety standards
• Materials used in medical science

Part 2 of the course gives an overview of medical equipment used for the following systems

• Cardiovascular
• Respiratory
• Neurological
• Renal and
• Medical imaging

COURSE OUTCOMES:

This course is designed to allow learners to develop practical and technical skills relevant to the maintenance, repair and technical support of medical equipment and the underpinning knowledge required to apply those skills in a clinical environment or similar work place.  The course aims to provide learners with the skills and knowledge to:

1. Identify OH&S requirements
2. Understand general anatomy and function of the major body systems
3. Understand electrical activity within the human body, methods of monitoring this activity, and its relevance to clinical treatment.
4. Demonstrate an awareness of the relevant electrical safety standards.
5. Recognise the inter-relationship between Medical Electronic equipment and Human Anatomy and Physiology
6. Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of infection control principles in a clinical environment under the supervision of a clinician.
7. Use appropriate resources, consumables, materials and test equipment to install, maintain and repair a wide range of electronic medical equipment used in clinical and hospital environments.

COMPETENCY STANDARDS:

The modules in this course will be used to support new competency units in the Utilities   Electrotechnology Training Package review.  The outcomes of the course have been developed through consultation with the relevant representatives of industry, community, and professional associations.
